Film Review: Padman. A movie about sanitary towels can only be a good thing...

The only other time I've ever seen sanitary towels mentioned on the big screen is in Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake. Any woman who has watched the film will most likely have been moved to tears to see a fellow female forced to steal sanitary products because she can't afford them.

That scene is sad enough, then the tale takes us to a food bank where we learn that they rarely ever receive donations of towels, meaning women up and down the country don't get adequate access to the menstrual products they need. It's a problem faced the world over. In Indian one man, Arunachalam Muruganantham, took it upon himself to invent a low-cost sanitary pad for rural women in India like his wife, revolutionalising menstrual health and hygiene in the the process.

His story became a biopic in the form of the movie Padman; ultimate feminist movie.
